Sad to see Butler lose again on Monday night. Great to see the little guy get to the big game again. I wish they would have won it, I'm tired of UCONN and its recruiting violations. They picked a bad time to have a bad shooting game.

Longtime Lexington girls basketball coach Randy Carpenter stepped down on Monday after 37 years at the school. He finishes with 492 victories with the Minutemaids. In an age where coaches come and go that is quite an accomplishment. As a kid going to basketball games in Minden I remember watching him pace the sidelines when Lexington would come to town to play the Whippets. I also remember being a little nervous 13 years ago when I got the job at KRVN and went to the high school to meet him for the first time. I had no reason to be, he made feel right at home and was as helpful as he could be to a young broadcaster who was still trying to find his way in a new town. There were certainly more highs than lows in his career. State titles in 1978 and 87 were two of the bigger highlights, with state runner up finishes in 1977 and 1991. When Lexington lost in overtime to Holdrege in the District Final in 2010, you had to wonder if he would ever get another chance at the state tournament in Lincoln. This spring it was a different story as Lexington beat Holdrege in the District final and made it to state in what turned out to be his final year at the school.

Sorry to see UNO lose its football and wrestling program today. That is a real bummer for the athletes and coaches I'm sure. I doubt if UNO will ever be very competitive in D1 basketball, volleyball and baseball but I guess you never know? If the money isn't there, they really had to do something else.

It seems as if we have entered the season of discontent with Nebraska football. A year ago at this time fans were excited about the Huskers and were talking about competing for a national title in 2010. This offseason the talk centers around which Husker assistants should hit the road after NU finished with a thud with losses to Oklahoma and Washington. There is obviously something wrong on offense. Whatever is being done isn't working. However blaming it all on offensive coordinator Shawn Watson is too easy. He is running the offense that coach Bo Pelini wants to see. When the Zone Read works it looks great, when it isn't executed correctly its like every other offense out there. I think NU needs to pick something and stick with it. Whether its Watson calling the plays next season or someone new sending down the plays from the press box, NU must make big strides on that side of the ball heading into the Big Ten. The responsiblity ultimately falls upon Bo Pelini to figure out what is wrong and have it fixed before Nebraska kicks off the season next September.

Interesting basketball games in Minden on Tuesday as the Whippets host Lexington in girls and boys basketball. The two programs have played in other sports over the years but haven't played in basketball since 1995, when Lexington was voted out of the Southwest Conference. The girls game should be a good one, each team is ranked in the top ten in its class. Lexington is led by All stater Hailey Mandelko, while Minden is paced by All stater Halle Bauer. In the boys game Minden is the favorite, but Lexington does a good job of playing defense and controling tempo. It was a shame that this series ever ended in the first place. It was short sighted thinking when Lexington was voted out of the league back in the mid 1990's. They were dominating the conference at the time in a number of different sports, but usually things go in cycles and in Lexington's case that has been true. Minden was down for a while but now has had great success in basketball over the last 5 years on both the girls and boys' side. Back in the day, if you were from Minden there were two teams that you really wanted to beat Holdrege and Lexington. It will never be that way again but hopefully this is a series that will continue. The girls game starts at 6pm with the boys game at 7:45pm and we will have the games for you on 93. 1 KRVN FM and on krvn.com.
