Tom McMahon

I have lived in West Point for the past 47 years after moving here from Omaha in 1964. I graduated from Central Catholic High School in 1973, and married my high school sweetheart Karen in April of 1975. We have two daughters, Stacey and her husband Phil (who just published a children's book, which is going to be a best seller, check out (Marblespark.com), and three grandsons, 5 year old McCoy, 2 year old Lincoln and Grady, born November 16th, 2010. My youngest daughter Kristi works as a surgical nurse at Boys Town and just got married (4/9/11) to Ryan Logemann of Omaha. Both of my daughter's have quality men in their lives. Kristi also has a four-legged little girl (Yorkie, 8 years old) named Annie, that is just like another grandchild. Since my last update we added a new member to our family, a three year old female Yorkie named Tessie with her very own personality.
I started working for KTIC back in the eighties part time as a sports announcer and board shift operator. I have been the Sports Director since 1997 here at KTIC, covering 13 schools in local sports broadcasts and currently doing the Bull Morning Show from 6am to 9am with Doug Anderson. I am a Virgo, favorite colors are red and blue, a Red Sox fanatic, and my favorite shows are any CSI, NCIS and SportsCenter. Hobbies include visiting family, sports memorabilia and an occasional round of golf.

On Saturday, April 2nd, the Cuming County Power District hosted a Power Drive rally.  The Bancroft-Rosalie Power Drive team organized the day's events at the fair grounds in West Point.  The team has been hosting this rally since 2004 with only 2 cancellations  The team raced 2 cars this year in West Point, with one crashing and unable to finish, while car number two came in 2nd place with Alex Berg at the wheel. The cars run on only two 12 volt batteries with speeds reaching 34 mph. The first race began at 10:00 a.m., and the 2nd race started at 11:30. Last Thursday night, October 14th in Dodge, it was "Spike Out Cancer" night as the Lady Pirates hosted the Humphrey Bulldogs in high school volleyball.  The two schools consolidated efforts by raising money buying and selling t-shirts, wristbands and soliciting donations.
Not only did the the girls raise a lot of money for the American Cancer Society, but Dodge even wore pink uniform tops during the contest, and all the girls from both teams sported some pink item showing their support for the fight against cancer.
Fans packed the gym as well dressed in whatever pink item they could find.  It was just a fantastic effort between the two towns, and one night this sports broadcaster won't soon forget.

For those that don't know by now I had surgery on my back and neck on September 7th, at Immanuel Hospital in Omaha. Dr. Longley performed both surgeries which took right around 4 1/2 hours. He fused the 3 and 4 in the lower back and found something more than he bargained for in the neck, which was a piece that never fused, and then he removed a bone spur. He said I was born with a small spinal canal opening. (and all these years I thought it was my brain) I don't see Dr. Longley until October 11th, so I know for sure I'm out that long and possibly a lot longer.
Like any other person you feel like you can go back to work after a few weeks, but after taking my daily two block walk, I understand why they say what they say. Not being able to broadcast and see the kids perform has definitely been the hardest part of the whole ordeal, except for not being able to go to work and tease my fellow employees each day.
I want to thank each and every person that has prayed for me, sent a greeting, stopped by or called, that has meant so much to me. I WILL BE BACK!!!!!
Oh, and by the way, I turned 55 on September 20th, so now I can enjoy all of those senior citizen specials.

I will be having a couple of surgeries on September 7th that will sideline me for quite a while. The first surgery is called Transforaminal Lumbar Interbody Fusion, which is a spinal fusion to stabilize the spinal vertebra and the disc or shock absorber between the vertebra. Lumbar fusion surgery is designed to create solid bone between the adjoining vertebra, eliminating any movement between the bones. The goal of the surgery is to reduce pain and nerve irritation.
The second will be on the neck, as some cleaning from previous surgeries needs to be done.  Hopefully the recovery process goes well and I can be back on my feet soon.
In the meantime please give your full support to the great crew that will cover sporting events during my absence, Doug Anderson, Jeremy Rasmussen, Kent Aurich & Mike Eilerts.  Hope to talk to you soon!
