Things That Matter is a weekly podcast of NeLCM-Lincoln and the Nebraska Synod of the ELCA co-hosted by Lincoln Campus Pastor, Adam White.
60 for 60 Campaign
In 1951 the cornerstone for the Lutheran Student House was laid on 16th
Street in Lincoln, in what would become the heart of the University of
Nebraska Campus. By the fall of 1952, the building was completed and
first occupied.
Over
the last sixty school years, the Lutheran Center, as it would
eventually come to be known, has served thousands of students at the
University of Nebraska impacting innumerable lives.
Campus
Pastor Alvin Petersen, reflecting on the building’s dedication in 1952
commented, “Dedication day was a spontaneous joy. Hundreds of
people—alumni, students, faculty, local church people, university
administrators—came. All came to rejoice.”
This
year we invite you to rejoice, to celebrate the ministry of the
Lutheran Center. In recognition of sixty years of ministry, NeLCM –
Lincoln is launching the 60 for 60 Campaign, looking back on the last
sixty years and forward to the next sixty to come.
We
are inviting alumni, partners and friends to give an extra $60 in
addition to their regular gifts to the Center. Our goal is to raise
$24,000 (400 gifts) for the Center with $12,000 going to regular budget
and the other $12,000 becoming seed money for re-development of the
front exterior of the Center.
Additionally,
on Sunday November 13th we are inviting all of our friends to a little
birthday party in Lincoln. Worship begins at 10:15 am and there will be a
party to follow. Consider yourself invited (If you’re joining us, RSVP
by calling 402-435-3697 or emailing Amanda at am.white@nelcm.com).
Lastly,
throughout the year, the students and staff at the Lutheran Center will
be working to compile an oral history of the Lutheran Center including
students, staff and friends, past and present. We are seeking people
willing to do on-camera interviews that tell some of the stories of the
last sixty years. We will release one short video a month through email
throughout this academic year and will compile a more substantial
history before fall 2012. If you want to be on the email list for this,
send us your email at lincoln@nelcm.com.
Honoring those who have made this place significant, let’s also make 2011-2012 “a spontaneous joy”.
